Success Stories -Promoting High School Peace Actors

Both Ebrahim Tolla  and Ebisa Bushura are among the students who have received training in peacebuilding, conflict mitigation, and life skills, which is conducted by the Egna Le Egna Youth Health and Development Organization with the support of USAID Ethiopia

Ebrahim Tolla

Ebrahim Tolla is twenty years old, born and living in Negele Arsi Town. He is a Grade 11 student at Negele Arsi High School and has two brothers and two sisters. He is one of the students who received training in life skills, peace building, and conflict mitigation, conducted by the Egna Le Egna Youth Health and Development Organization. Before the training, he used to think that whenever there was an anti-government demonstration, the Oromo people were being attacked. He believed he needed to go to the streets to raise his voice, engage in unpeaceful activities, and participate in destructive actions. He had also been involved in drug addiction, mainly chewing chat and smoking cigarettes. After the training, he gained a better understanding of life skills concepts and decided to share this knowledge with his friends, encouraging them to change their habits of chewing chat and smoking cigarettes. He also shared his belief that young people should not engage in anti-peace activities, but rather express their interests in peaceful ways and avoid abusing drugs.

Ebissa Bushura

Ebisa Bushura is a 9th-grade student at Buchanan High School in Shashemene Town. Before the training, Ebisa assumed that peace was simply about greeting someone with "Good morning" or "Good afternoon," rather than understanding the profound impact of peace. During the training, he was particularly impressed by the Peace Circle concepts, which are deeply embedded in our choices and personalities. After the training, Ebisa realized that peace holds great value in our lives, and without it, we cannot perform our day-to-day activities, including learning. He understood that, in recent years, particularly in our area of Ethiopia, people have been involved in conflicts due to their ethnicity—something that is naturally given and not a choice. Yet, the majority of our community has not fully understood this. Now, he has taken on the responsibility of facilitating small group dialogues at school and in the churches he attends. He is also planning to organize various dialogue events in the school environment and actively works on educating and raising awareness among his peers.
